When do I need a fit note?
Doctors issue fit notes to people to provide evidence of the advice they have given about their fitness for work. They record details of the functional effects of their patient’s condition so the patient and their employer can consider ways to help them return to work.
You only need a Fit Note if you are unable to work and are ill for longer than seven calendar days.
For your information only – please see this guidance The fit note: guidance for patients and employees – GOV.UK– 3.2 Your healthcare professional will only give you a fit note if your health affects your fitness for work, they cannot give you a fit note stating that you are ‘fit for work.’ The fit note is classed as advice from your healthcare professional to help you and your employer discuss ways to support you to stay in, or return to, work.
